In response to the growing number of scams targeting Chinese American elderly, the CAIPA Foundation, in collaboration with the Taiwan Center and NYPD’s 109th Precinct, recently hosted a community seminar focused on scam prevention for seniors. The event drew nearly 100 attendees.

Officer Vlaovich from the 109th Precinct’s Crime Prevention Unit shared the top ten most common scams affecting the community — including impersonation scams, romance scams, online scams, investment schemes, roofing scams, and various forms of ATM and jewelry-related scams. He emphasized the importance of staying vigilant, protecting personal information, and avoiding suspicious money transfers.

To better understand the impact of scams on seniors, the CAIPA Foundation also distributed a survey to assess whether victims have experienced emotional or psychological distress. The results will help guide the development of support services for those affected.
